A Mother can never say goodbye
For she is our heartbeat within,
We loved her, she loved us
Before time could begin.

She opens her arms wide to let us go
But in her heart we will always stay,
Secure in her watch-care forever
As we slip in and out to play.

Her spirit wafts in a fragrance sweet
She is in the color of a new day, or a room,
The fun of life, the flavor of chocolate dreams
And the gentle face upon the moon.

She is in the wrapping of a cookie packet
The movement of our hand at will,
The turn of our cheeky smile, the way we are
A caterpillar crawling on our window sill.

We see her love riding in the sky
Watching the clouds scudding by,
Can't we hear her as we chuckle
Her thoughts embedded deep inside.

And when we speak, oh there she is
In every word and song and rhyme,
Our mother can never ever die
When she is in us for all time.

"Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall;
A mother's secret hope outlives them all."
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)

Richer than Gold
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be --
I had a mother who read to me.
Strickland Gillilan
