Mardi Gras is the last day before Lent begins. Ash Wednesday is the day after Mardi Gras, and the first day of Lent. Lent lasts 40 days, plus Sundays, and Easter is the first day after Lent.

To determine the date of Mardi Gras, you need to know the date of Easter Sunday, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox. Since Lent lasts 40 days, plus Sundays, you can go back 7 Sundays from Easter, and Mardi Gras will be the following Tuesday.

The first Mardi Gras was in Mobile, Alabama
History of Mardi Gras

A special thanks to Minnie who sent me the Mardi Gras photos used in the Mosaic Java Applet above. Minnie lives in Mobile! That's her husband on the horse in the first slide! She will be on a float February 12, 2002. How exciting! She will be sending more photos of Mardi Gras, so check back again!
