~ Always At My Side ~
She was my companion, during walks
on chilly days
Never wandered far from me, even in her puppy ways
If she heard my voice, she would come to call
When around, she'd always want her ball.
Just like a mother, protective of my children
She would never bite, but get a warning in
Strong bonds were built, together they played
Growing up together, I guess you could say.
With all our cats, the play looked too rough
Still they came back, as if not getting enough
Ambushes were set, fur flew from the hedge
It was so rare, for her to get the edge.
Had a bad habit though, of cornering a skunk
Wet with tomato juice, how she sure stunk
It did not happen often, of this I am glad
If not for that vice, she never was bad.
Never needed a leash, though a dog of fair size
Just say her name, she'd be at my side
Shepherd the breed, so gentle in nature
There to protect family, in any danger.
Always so loyal, fifteen seasons she stayed
Even when we slept, beside the bed she would lay
My best friend, for those years spent together
I still feel her with me, through all chilly weather.
