Fishing

~ Grandpa's Example ~

Grandpa said, "Son, get me some twine
and a little limb,
An' we'll make us a fishin' pole
to catch some brim."

Now I was only six or there about,
And I didn't know a 'brim' from 'trout',
In no time at all he'd rigged a hook
from a large safety pin,
"Yes sir, we're goin' fishin',
Just us men",

Now Grandpa, he don't like bait
that's store bought,
So we dug us some worms and used
crickets we'd caught.

"Ahhhhhhhh,"  Grandpa sighs
As he shows me how to cast,
"Watch real close son;
We might just catch us a Bass",

"LOOK BOY!"
Grandpa shouts,
"There's a catfish swimming
Along the shore,
Why, I'd bet he's at least a foot or more,
Quick, take off your shoes
And socks,
An' do what I tell ya' to do,
Sneak up on that ol' catfish
And show him who's who!",

Just as I dangled my line in front of his nose,
I felt something cold an' slimy
Slither over my toes,
"WOW, Watch him go!"

Grandpa looked just in time
To see me hook that fish,
I shouted, "GIVE IT UP MR. CATFISH,
YOU'RE ALL MINE!"

Whew!...This fishin' is quite an ordeal,
"Grandpa!"  I shout,
"Get the skillet out,
Here comes our meal!"

When God made Grandfathers,
He sure knew what he was doin',
'Cause my Grandpa set a good example
For me today,

And
When I grow up to be a Grandpa,
I'm going to take my grandchildren
Out to play.
