~ Tender Gardener ~
Up the trail, past bloom and
snail
She makes her way through morning
Petals flying -- how they sail
Spring breezes give no warning
She must get pots from the shed
For planting is her mission
It's all just so, there in her head
A kaleidoscopic vision
Back up the trail and to the porch
Clay pots stacked one foot high
A late-day sun comes out to scorch
Sweet tea will get her by
Geraniums in plastic pots
Petunias, pansies too
Impatiens and forget-me-nots
Lobelia, purple-blue
The damp, sweet smell of Mother Earth
Fills her nostrils up in spades
She loves each plant and knows their worth
Puts on her hat for shade
Kneeling there, in the sun
Takes flowers by their roots
She gently transplants, every one
Each thirsty, verdant shoot
Miniature garden in each pot
A silken, vibrant treasure
She toils in soil, with all she's got
To bring others simple pleasure
She puts each clay pot in the back
Of her old pickup truck
Though tired and sweaty, feels no lack
Her work gloves full of muck
Now, to the hospice she will go
Enlisting helpful hands
Sad eyes light up, then she will know
She's done all that she can
Tend your garden, full of splendor
Cherish every flower
Give of yourself -- it's love you render
Don't waste one single hour
