~ The Life Of A
Rancher ~
A cold
morning on my horse
I have to check on all the cattle
Coyotes have been seen around
A few I might have to battle.
So many chores I have to do
But there's only so many hours in a day
I have fences to mend; cattle to brand
And then store some bales of hay.
Getting up before the dawn
Making a list of things to do
Sipping my coffee and having a smoke
As I try to think things through.
I have to feed the livestock
I struggle to put my boots on
I make my way out to the barn
Some chores have to be done before dawn.
As I saddle up my horse
I grab my jacket to fight off the chill
I climb onto her back and with a kick
We head out towards the hills.
It's there I see my cattle grazing
Everything seems quiet for now
No signs of any coyotes
As sweat starts beading on my brow.
I head on down to the lower forty
Some fencing needs repair
It's going to be a long day
As I mumble, curse, and swear.
The hours fly by quickly
And soon the sun starts to set
I head back to the ranch
A few more chores and then I can rest.
This day is like the one before
Blending into another
Such is the life of a rancher
A life that is like none other.
